Position Name: Associate Director, City Partnerships

Department: City Engagement Team

Reports To: Director, City Partnerships

Classification: Exempt

Brief Summary of Position:

The Associate Director, City Partnerships is an integral member of the City Engagement team and is responsible for building relationships with city officials and agencies to develop public-private partnerships and implement city engagement plans in priority cities. The Associate Director will also play a vital role in supporting efforts to develop and improve resources for cities. The Associate Director provides guidance on team priorities, engages in strategic planning and goal-setting, and assists team members with all aspects of day-to-day operations, relationship development, and program implementation. The City Engagement team plays a critical role in supporting the mission of KaBOOM! by fostering strong partnerships with city governments, local elected officials, and community leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and cultivate relationships with key contacts in cities across the country to understand their priorities, issues and challenges and to determine how to leverage the expertise of KaBOOM! to meet their needs
  • Lead implementation of key public-private partnerships by helping overcome challenges, developing creative solutions, and satisfying city-specific goals
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments and proactively identify opportunities for collaboration with government agencies in priority cities
  • Help shape the strategy for establishing and maintaining city partnerships in collaboration with the Director, City Partnerships and participate in implementing and evaluating the strategy for the City Engagement Team
  • Lead research on successful frameworks for technical assistance and develop menu of advisory services and tools that can be made available by KaBOOM! to cities, including a peer learning network and support of the Playful City USA program
  • Conduct presentations, workshops, and trainings to highlight innovative play opportunities and showcase the work of KaBOOM! at national, regional, and local conferences and meetings of local government officials
  • Understand the landscape of play among mission-aligned organizations with city networks to explore possible partnerships and elevate the conversation around playability among local government officials
  • Collaborate with KaBOOM! colleagues to implement programs in line with the organization’s strategic goals and advance our work with cities
  • Actively contribute to our inclusive work environment by valuing other people regardless of differences and takes an active role in promoting practices that support diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence.


  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of work experience in a related field (e.g., public policy, urban/city planning, public health, education)
  • Experience and demonstrated record of success working with city-level government, either as a partner or from within, particularly as it relates to city administrative, legislative and budgeting processes
  • Ability to interact effectively with local officials and all levels of city agency staff
  • Deep understanding of the nuances of government bureaucracy, including a sensing mechanism for complex political dynamics and how to diplomatically work within those dynamics
  • A sharp mind, top-notch critical thinking and organizational capabilities, adept at quickly absorbing information from various angles, always keeping an eye on the big picture while maintaining superior attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively distill large amounts of information and provide recommendations on how to proceed with opportunities in cities
  • Openness and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting with aggressive deadlines and significant ambiguity, manage multiple priorities and projects at once, and balance long-term goals with daily demands
  • High level of integrity, trust and accountability along with excellent judgment, intuition, and common sense as well as the right blend of professional confidence with a keen sense of diplomacy
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Collaborative, team-oriented work style with self-motivation and drive to get the job done with little supervision

An exceptional candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Health, or related field
  • An existing network of relationships with stakeholders in city governments
  • Experience managing key relationships with strategic decision-makers
  • Experience advocating on behalf of underserved communities when competing for extremely limited resources
