Position Profile
Brief Description:

The area Associate Director/Medical Science Liaison (AD) is part of a regional MSL team who will report into the MSL Director. The AD will serve as a key player-coach and manager for the Field Medical Affairs team. They will spend 50% of their time managing and coaching the regional MSLs and 50% of their time managing a small focused region with up to two academic centers.

Essential Job Functions:

Job Responsibilities:

The objective of the AD is to be in the field conducting scientific exchange with Key though leaders and investigators; planning, preparing for, and conducting field based interactions and scientific exchange in support of the medical and scientific objectives
Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to:
  • Proactively conduct scientific exchange with key opinion leaders within the territory as guided by their tactical medical engagement plan.
  • Possess an established medical/scientific background and a proven ability to effectively communicate complex information
  • Establish and maintain scientific relationships with key opinion leaders, clinical investigators, and providers at academic and non-academic settings in order to achieve mutually agreed upon objectives (i.e., investigator-initiated studies, publications, etc.)
  • Develop a strong understanding of territory clinical practices related to patient care, disease management, treatment protocols, and research interests.
  • Ensure that all interactions and activities in the territories adhere to corporate and healthcare compliance guidance in all activities, including those related to clinical trials, scientific interactions with internal and external groups, and responses to unsolicited requests for medical/scientific information.

Additional Responsibilities/Duties:

Managerial responsibilities related to the supervision, mentoring, hiring and development of regional MSLs. As a field leader, the AD will be responsible for implementing field programs and delivering on group and individual metrics for their team.
Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to:
  • Work closely with the MSL Director, proactively communicate team needs, and establish a positive and collaborative team culture.
  • Define, clarify and manage the regional team priorities while promoting collaboration within the team and with customers.
  • Implement routine visits with their regional MSL reports and ensure that goals/performance/ development plans are reviewed on a quarterly basis.
  • Ensure that their team is well-trained, clinically prepared and scientifically up-to-date on all key subjects related to Jazz products, clinical trials and medical strategy.
  • Conducts annual and mid-year performance reviews; create and encourage an environment that stresses open, candid, and timely feedback relative to performance.
  • Accomplishes goals within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices.


Essential Qualifications:
  • MD, PharmD, or PhD degree, experience in Hematology/Oncology preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience, including at least 2 years of proven successful managing experience. Experience managing a team of MSLs preferred
  • Demonstrated acumen in presenting clinical and pre-clinical data to external audience and senior management required.
  • Strong leadership, team building, negotiation and ability to execute
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Field-based position requiring up to 60% travel
