Overview

Assistant Graphic Designer

The Princeton University Art Museum, one of the nation’s preeminent cultural institutions in an academic setting, seeks applications for the position of part-time Assistant Graphic Designer. This is an 80% time (approximately 29 hours per week) term position through December 31, 2020, with the possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the context of an art museum that is intimate in scale yet expansive in scope, supporting one of the most dynamic exhibition programs on any college campus and a program of educational activities and events that continues to grow in energy and impact each year.



Responsibilities

The Assistant Graphic Designer will assist the Graphic Designer in developing and producing a wide range of print and electronic materials, including gallery labels, brochures, ads and promotional materials, signage, and exhibition graphics. The Assistant Graphic Designer will work closely with administrative, curatorial, editorial, and marketing staff to understand the substantive, interpretive, and informational goals of exhibitions, publications, and other projects and to identify the ways in which these can be achieved through design solutions, working within budgetary frameworks to meet rigorous production schedules. Under the direction of the Graphic Designer and the Associate Director for Publishing and Communications, the Assistant Graphic Designer will create original designs and work within established templates to provide outstanding visual solutions for the Museum’s varied programs.

The successful candidate will be a creative and self-motivated individual with a team-based approach and an unwavering attention to detail. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design and format labels and environmental graphics for collection installations and temporary exhibitions (30%)
  • Create print advertisements, direct mail pieces, and promotional signage for Museum events and programs (30%)
  • Develop interpretive materials for family and student programs; provide design support for annual Gala and other development programs (20%)
  • Design/adapt materials for use on website and social media (10%)
  • Coordinate production of the above jobs with outside vendors (10%)


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (major in graphic design, visual communications, the visual arts, or similar)
  • Expertise with Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and PhotoShop
  • Experience preparing specifications; identifying, selecting, and coordinating with printers, fabricators, and other vendors
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for typography
  • Minimum of two years related work experience, preferably in a museum or cultural setting
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a broad array of people
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities and juggle competing demands
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and composure under pressure
  • Excellent project coordination skills with particular attention to detail and accuracy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of museums and/or art history
  • Experience with web-based graphic design
  • Knowledge of print production, including on-press experience
  • Experience working as part of a team

The Assistant Graphic Designer must have a proven ability to work well within a complex institutional environment to meet deadlines, multitask, collaborate, and communicate effectively among diverse project constituents. A bachelor’s degree is required. The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.
