We are seeking a full-time Assistant Specialist for a funded project at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), University of California, Santa Barbara through the Conservation Aquaculture Research Team (CART). The project is a continuation of current research focused on spatially mapping and quantifying the impacts, potential adaptations, and mitigation measures for aquaculture under climate change, at local to global scales. Thus, the research encompasses different types of aquaculture at different ecological scales and environments.
The candidate will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, CA and will engage with ongoing and emerging research projects as well as have the opportunity to pursue her/his own research related to the project theme. This position will be responsible for: 1) expanding the spatial modelling and mapping of climate change threats to global brackish and freshwater aquaculture; 2) down scaling climate change impacts to specific regions of interest (e.g., SE Asia); and 3) develop her/his own project of interest that can include, but not limited to, linkages to other food systems or focus on the land-sea interface. This full-time position offers competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. We are seeking a full-time Assistant Specialist for a funded project at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), University of California, Santa Barbara through the Conservation Aquaculture Research Team (CART). The project is a continuation of current research focused on spatially mapping and quantifying the impacts, potential adaptations, and mitigation measures for aquaculture under climate change, at local to global scales. Thus, the research encompasses different types of aquaculture at different ecological scales and environments.
The candidate will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, CA and will engage with ongoing and emerging research projects as well as have the opportunity to pursue her/his own research related to the project theme. This position will be responsible for: 1) expanding the spatial modelling and mapping of climate change threats to global brackish and freshwater aquaculture; 2) down scaling climate change impacts to specific regions of interest (e.g., SE Asia); and 3) develop her/his own project of interest that can include, but not limited to, linkages to other food systems or focus on the land-sea interface. This full-time position offers competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. The appointment is for 18 months, with the possibility of extension pending available funds and strong performance. The successful candidate will work with Ben Halpern and Halley Froehlich, integrated with his research lab and the CART initiative – which offers opportunities to work across other on-going and related projects, including “Environmental Impact and Sustainability of Global Food Systems.”
RESIDENCY AT NCEAS: NCEAS is located in scenic downtown Santa Barbara, California. The Center is known for fostering interaction and collaboration, a characteristic that leads to the success of its visiting scientists. NCEAS has a growing and thriving community of postdocs, resident scientists, and analysts, and frequent influx of leading scientists and practitioners from around the world participating in working group projects. We expect the candidate to contribute their knowledge, interests, and enthusiasm to the intellectual atmosphere. This Assistant Specialist should anticipate spending the vast majority of their time working at the Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:Basic• MSc in natural resource management and/or aquaculture, climate change, aquatic ecology or related disciplines
Preferred:• PhD in natural resource management and/or aquaculture, climate change, aquatic ecology or related disciplines• Proficient in R programming• Strong analytical and modeling background, particularly spatial analyses • Ability to review and synthesize large amounts of literature and disparate data sources• Strong communication and interpersonal skills• Outstanding organizational skills• Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team• Strong publication record• Experience working with groups outside of academia (industry, NGOs, etc.)
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 18 months, with the potential for extension pending funding and evaluation of performance.
